Garmin QuestThe Quest from Garmin is a mid-range satellite navigation unit. The unit offers all the benefits normally found on a unit in this price range. The unit will automatically recalculate routes if the user should stray off the planned route. Voice-guided, turn by turn directions are given as well as the route being displayed in colour on the clear screen. The unit can either be powered direct from the cigarette lighter or using the combined speaker/12-24volt adapter. Once charged, the unit can also be used as a standalone due to its internal Li-Ion battery. The screen is bright and clear and the graphics are sharp. The brightness of the unit can be dimmed after dark to ensure the glare of the unit doesn't affect the driver. Points of Interest are also included so it is easy to find hotels, hospitals, airports etc. The user can also add their own waypoints with names, categories, comments and graphical symbols. Additional Points of Interest can be added using the free POILoader software available from the Garmin website. A built-in satellite receiving antenna and a rechargeable internal battery mean this is a true all-in-one unit that can easily be transferred from one vehicle to another. The unit is of rugged construction and is waterproof (the manufacturer claims it can be submerged in 1 metre of water for 30 minutes - we don't advocate trying this yourself though!). The unit normally comes with street-level maps of the UK and major routes of Europe. Maps are stored internally and the system is compatible with other MapSource cartography - so it can be used for other outdoor pursuits. A USB connection allows the user to connect the unit to a PC for loading of maps. You may like to also consider the new GO 510 from TomTom.
