TomTom ONE GB

New from TomTom in Autumn 2006 came version 2 of the TomTom ONE - available in either a regional (GB) or European version.

Building on the success of the previous TomTom ONE - the new versions offer affordable, comprehensive navigation for today's motorist.

As an entry-level system, the new TomTom ONE boasts a number of features that will make any journey more enjoyable.

As with all other TomTom's, the new ONE is "plug and go" and can be used straight out of the box. Controlling the TomTom ONE GB is simple using the touchscreen menu system. Quickly find destinations and plan routes ahead of your journey. The latest TomTom maps come stored on SD memory cards for use straight out of the box.

In common with the other TomTom's, the ONE GB allows the user to determine how routes are calculated - shortest, quickest, avoiding toll roads and congestion charging areas. The user can also plan their route based on their desired arrival time - need to be at your destination for 2.00pm - just tell TomTom ONE and it will calculate the departure time for you (best to add 10 minutes or so to allow for hold-ups! - Ed).

The unit is housed in a new, sleek design and the bright, sharp screen has an anti-glare coating to aid use in bright sunlight.

Directions and instructions are voice-spoken and the volume of the unit automatically adjusts based on the speed of the car - allowing for ambient noise to ensure all directions are heard loud and clear.

The TomTom ONE comes with Bluetooth capabilities allowing the user to link a Bluetooth compatible mobile phone (available separately!) to their TomTom ONE.

The TomTom ONE is also compatible with TomTom PLUS services. This is a subscription service, used in conjunction with a Bluetooth mobile (with GPRS functionality) allowing the system to receive real-time traffic and weather information, thus allowing the system to calculate optimum route to destination taking into account conditions en-route.

All things considered, this is a good system for those taking their first steps in in-car satellite navigation - TomTom are the market-leaders in the UK and the new TomTom ONE GB only serves to reinforce this position
